Colbert County Animal Shelter adoption events

Mark your calendars for these dates if you're looking to adopt a pet. The Colbert County Animal Shelter will hold adoption events on the following days:

  • Saturday April 13 from 10 a.m.-4p.m. at PETCO in Florence.
  • Saturday April 20 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. at Shoals Flea Market
  • Saturday April 21 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Shoals Flea Market
  • Saturday April 27 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at PETCO in Florence
  • Saturday May 4 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the shelter

Potential adoptive families can visit the animal shelter at 5010 Missouri St. in Tuscumbia.

Muscle Shoals screening impresses college audience

The March 1 screening of the Muscle Shoals documentary was a big hit amongst crowds. In particular, the screening left a big impression on the University of North Alabama students who viewed the documentary.

“I never realized how rich the musical culture was here in the Shoals,” said Lauren Daley, a UNA student. “I was so impressed with the screening and found it was a very enjoyable way to spend the evening. I left proud to be from the Shoals.”

Students received free tickets to the documentary, which was screened as part of the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival.

The screening was introduced by The Civil Wars star and UNA alumnus John Paul White.

“Our secret will finally be revealed to the world,” he said. “This is each and every one of us.”

On Friday, March 1, UNA brought Muscle Shoals to life for students and the community at Norton Auditorium with the screening of the documentary about a place so close to home.

The documentary, 'Muscle Shoals' revealed the true history of the area through its music and its fame. 

Young artists see work displayed in Florence

Young artists see work displayed in Florence

Florence, AL (WAFF) - Young artists from northwest Alabama are putting their work on display this spring.

Artistic Renderings of Youth, a juried exhibit of work by 7th through 12th grade artists from Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties, will be on display at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence from March 5 through April 17. It's all part of a celebration of Youth Art Month.

Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts is located at 217 East Tuscaloosa Street in Florence and is open, free of charge, from 9:00a.m. to 4:00p.m., Monday through Friday. Museum programs are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

George Lindsey Film Festival has big events planned

George Lindsey Film Festival has big events planned

The University of North Alabama’s annual George Lindsey Film Festival will premier several big events and faces for viewers during its three day run Feb. 28 through March 2.

The acclaimed “Muscle Shoals” documentary following the history of music in the Shoals area will officially kick off the festival with two screenings. On Feb. 27, VIP audiences will be invited to view the documentary at the Marriott Shoals Conference Center. The documentary will also be shown Fri., March 1 in Norton Auditorium.

“We are very fortunate to have been chosen to host the Alabama premieres of ‘Muscle Shoals,’” said UNA assistant professor of English and co-direct of The George Lindsey Film Festival. “This film is important to film, to music history, and to the Shoals community.  Audiences can expect 102 minutes of some of the biggest names in music talking about how Muscle Shoals came to be among the most important places in the history of music.”
