Gift cards and closing stores: what to do

Gift cards and closing stores: what to do

A bankruptcy court judge ruled on Wednesday that the holders of some $210 million in Borders Books gift cards were out of luck: too much time had passed since the September 2011 retailer's shuttering to force its liquidators to reimburse the value of over 17 million cards that went unspent.

Whether the claimants in the lawsuit claimed ignorance or not, it would be hard to argue that the gift card holders didn't have a chance to be notified about Borders' bankruptcy or to spend their cards. Borders announced the bankruptcy in the early summer of 2011, and the last store shut its doors in late September of that year.

New breast test available in Sheffield

Molecular imaging is under the umbrella of nuclear medicine, according to Radiology Technologist Cheryl McGhee.

SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF)- Helen
Keller Hospital in Sheffield is the first facility in the southeast to offer
molecular breast imaging using the GE Healthcare's Discovery NM 750b.

Molecular imaging is under the
umbrella of nuclear medicine, according to Radiology Technologist Cheryl
McGhee.

"Nuclear
medicine studies are designed so you're injected with a small amount of radio
isotope. It's designated to go to a certain, specific, target area in the body;
this is designed for the breast," she said.

She said the isotope pinpoints
and highlights the diseased tissue, and the new tool shows that diseased tissue
without using radiation.

"The
only radiation is in the isotope that you're injected with. There is no
radiation involved with taking the images."  And she said that goes
away quickly. "Within six hours, your body's already broke it down and
expelled it out," said McGhee.

Deadly respiratory illness in AL stumps CDC

HOUSTON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- There is a mystery brewing in south Alabama. An illness has hospitalized several people, killing two of them.

It is something that leaves the patient struggling to breathe.

The Alabama Department of Public Health is putting everyone on notice about a mystery illness.  Epidemiologists are conferring with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about a cluster of respiratory illnesses.

The origin of the illness is unknown, but it is striking people in the Houston County area.  So far, seven people have been hospitalized with fever, cough, and shortness of breath.   Two of those patients have died.

Lab specimens have been collected and are being studied.   For now, both the Public Health Department and the CDC are recommending hospitals use respiratory protocol when dealing someone with such an illness, meaning masks and gloves.

Annual Click It or Ticket campaign begins

Officers will aggressively enforce the use of seat-belts in motor vehicles.

TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF)- Click It or Ticket: The annual campaign to crack down on seatbelt use is in full swing.

Law enforcement officers from across northwest Alabama gathered in Tuscumbia to kick off the event.

As the unofficial start of summer approaches, officers will aggressively enforce the use of seat-belts in motor vehicles.

Officers say they want to encourage drivers and passengers to take the extra step that, in most cases, may help save their lives.

"You have the option of not wearing a seatbelt. We are obligated that when we stop you for the violation to enforce the action because we know, historically, seatbelts will keep you alive more times than they won't," said Trooper Thad Chandler.

Last year, 513 people died on Alabama roadways.

Troopers said of that total, 251 of those victims were not wearing a seatbelt.

Sheffield Police Department a 'patriotic employer'

Two banners hang in the entryway at the Sheffield Police Department, symbolizing their support for two of their men currently on deployments.

SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF)- One police department is getting national recognition for its support of the troops.

The Sheffield Police Department has been named a "patriotic employer" three times in the last four years.

It is an award Chief Greg Ray describes as bittersweet.

"It is a double edged sword because we are taking some of our best officers and sending them to the conflicts all throughout, and we also have a home front to protect, so it's kind of a catch-22 situation, but we realize this has to happen," he said.

Covering their positions on the home front isn't always easy.
