Police search for driver who left crash scene and injured Leighton officer | News
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
Police in Colbert County are looking for a driver who left the scene of a crash that sent an officer to the hospital. They are looking for a gold dodge pick-up truck with a tool box in the back. They think it may be out in the Leighton community or somewhere in Colbert County.
Emergency crews airlifted Officer Jeff Jacobs to Huntsville Thursday night.
As of Friday morning, officials say Jacobs was listed in stable condition but officials said he was expected to undergo back surgery at some point Friday afternoon. His current condition is unknown at this time.
Jacobs is the Assistant Chief of Police in Leighton and we’re told he's only been with the department for about a year.
Police say the crash happened just after 6 o'clock on Fennel Road in Leighton.
They say Jacobs was in pursuit of a speeding car. When he rounded a curb, they say the car was sitting in the road with its lights off. We’re told that's when Jacobs swerved to miss the vehicle and ended up trapped in his patrol car down an embankment.
If you have any information on where the truck or driver is, you’re asked to call police immediately.
