Hearing set for Colbert County man accused of capital murder | News
COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- The man accused of killing a man while holding his family hostage in Colbert County is set to appear in court later this month.
Derek Burt was charged with three counts of capital murder for reportedly killing Harry Ricks in 2008.
A judge set a preliminary hearing for August 21, 2012.
Ricks' family said they hope the arrest of Derek Burt will lead to more arrests, further clarifying court documents stating others were involved with the incident.
"It was on God's time. I think he was waiting for my daughter and I to be able to handle this, because we have to relive this all over again," Rita Ricks, the wife of Harry said.
Nearly four years after her husband was murdered in their home, Rita said her family is now beginning to get the closure they've been looking for.
In November 2008, three men armed with guns entered Ricks' home and tied up the family of three. According to court documents, the men were demanding money believed to have been in the house. At one point, Harry Ricks was able to get his legs free and as he ran to the door for help, he was shot in the head.
Earlier this summer officials were able to match DNA evidence from the scene with Derek Burt, 32, from Jefferson County.
Rita said she has dozens of questions left to be answered by the men who killed her husband.
"Why, that's the question. I don't question God why it happened; I want to question them why it happened. I know everything happens for a reason, but I still don't know why they came in our home, you know, if they knew my husband, or what the connection is," she said.
Authorities said there is a reward for information leading to the arrest of the other two people involved.
