Shoals students accept 'Rachel's Challenge' to be kind | News

SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF)- In light of the recent violent acts in schools across the country, one group is working to stop the violence, and they're doing it in memory of one of the victims in the Columbine shooting.

Students in the Shoals pledged to take part in Rachel's Challenge.

Named after Columbine victim Rachel Joy Scott, family and friends have set out on a pro-kindness campaign at schools across the country.

On Tuesday, students in Sheffield voluntarily accepted Rachel's Challenge, a pledge to spread kindness through actions and words.

Organizers said it's more than just an anti-bully program. The program focuses on how small acts of kindness and acceptance can change relationships.

Program leader Sam Downing said creating compassionate environments for students is needed now more than ever.

"This program is more important than ever, I think. Obviously, we're aware of what happened in Connecticut and places where there have been school shootings, but the best way to combat violence and evil is to overwhelm it with kindness and compassion, and sometimes all students need is a little inspiration from someone who is their ages - someone they can identify with as a peer who had the courage to step out and show kindness to others," said Downing.

A special community program will be held Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Sheffield High School.
